The Fog: A thick haze from the Pacific hangs over a Northwest seaside village, bringing with it murderous and vengeful ghosts. Shadow of a Doubt: Perceptive Americana entangled with tale of youthful gal who gradually comes to grasp her cherished Uncle Charley is seriously the Merry Widow killer. Cast includes Teresa Wright, Joseph Cotten, Macdonald Carey, Patricia Collinge, Henry Travers, Wallace Ford, and Hume Cronyn. (108 minutes, 1943)
MacArthur: An intense look at the legend of the elaborate military chief throughout WW2 and the Korean War. Peck is phenomenal although the film doesn’t hold the punch of Patton. Cast includes Gregory Peck, Dan O’Herlihy, Ed Flanders, Sandy Kenyon, Dick O’Neill, and Craft Fleming. (130 minutes, 1977)
The Red Badge of Courage: A yankee cadet (Murphy0 escapes under fire and is guilt afflicted over his obvious absence of courage. The high quality battle scenes and some genuinely terrifying cavalry charges highlight this research of the fine line between cowardice and courage. Cast includes Audie Murphy, Bill Mauldin, Douglas Dick, Royal Dano, John Dierkes, Arthur Hunnicutt, Tim Durant, and Andy Devine. (69 minutes, 1951)
Days of Glory: Genuine although trudging WW2 action film pitting the Russians versus the Nazis is memorable only as Peck’s big screen debut. Cast includes Gregory Peck, Alan Reed, Maria Palmer, Lowell Gilmore, and Tamara Toumanova. (86 minutes, 1944)
Commandos: A stereotype-filled war drama with a typical story line; Italian commandos, led by a few stalwart Americans, need to secure a vital location in the North African desert before Allied landings. Cast includes Lee Van Cleef, Jack Kelly, Giampiero Albertini, Marino Marie, Pierre Paulo Capponi, and Duilio Del Prete. (89 minutes, 1964)
The Shadow: Lamont Cranston, having lived a life of ethical degradation, is “reborn” as a single minded crime fighter with the talent to read gentlemen’s minds. This adaptation of the venerable mush novels and cherished radio show (brought to the theaters in the late 1930s). Cranston is both inscrutable and boring. Incredible production layout and wonderful outcomes get lost in a film that keeps the viewer focused on Ann’s magnitude all the way through. What a waste of an awesome supporting cast! Cast includes Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Peter Boyle, Ian McKellen, Tim Curry, Jonathan Winters, and Sab Shimono. (105 minutes, 1994)
Dinner Rush: A tumultuous day in the life of a fashionable N.Y.C. restaurant. Owner Aiello is considering of giving up his bookie job, his cook is requesting part ownership of the restaurant, and then 2 mobsters materialize to pay an unfriendly visit, etc. Flavorful film has the ring of reality inside the restaurant, and outside it is is brimming with life. Cast includes Danny Aiello, Edoardo Ballerini, Vivian Wu, Mike McGlone, Kirk Acevedo, John Corbett, Sandra Bernhard, Summer Phoenix, Polly Draper, Mark Margolis, and Ajay Naidu. (100 minutes, 2001)
The Big Road: This movie is about a shy busboy who commits himself to a selfish nightclub singer. The film is abnormal (and oddly watchable), with extremely unorthodox roles for both Fonda and Ball. Cast includes Henry Fonda, Lucille Ball, Barton Mafamilye, Eugene Pallette, Agnes Moorehead, Sam Levene, Ray Collins, Hans Conried, and Ozzie Nelson. (88 minutes, 1942)
